Financial Scams

Financial Scams
Financial scams targeting Nova Scotians appear to be on the rise again. Lunenburg District RCMP have received numerous reports from the public regarding letters and emails that were received from individuals claiming they are from countries such as Japan, Australia, Africa, United Kingdom, etc. The request generally consist of someone telling the recipient that he/she can come into a large sum of money because of a long lost relative or someone who bears the last name of that individual. The person who has their same last name is deceased and died intestate because he has no next of kin. After an exhaustive search for a relative, your name was chosen because you have the same last name.

The person contacting you is only too willing to split the money as long as you keep the transaction confidential while they await your reply. The sad thing is that some people in Lunenburg County have responded to these letters and emails. A few have even sent money on the request of the scam artist. Yes these are scams and you should not reply to whoever sent the correspondence. Anything that is “too good to be true” should be reported to PHONE BUSTERS (888-495-8501), your nearest police agency or destroyed. Seniors are targeted the most so before you part with your money, check with a relative or phone the police for assistance to make sure things are legitimate.
